Thousands of Sensing Points
Fiber optic sensing monitors a fiber optic cable from a single location via pulses of light traveling down the fiber. It provides continuous 24/7 monitoring over long distances. The fiber itself is the sensor, so there are literally thousands of sensing points along the route of whatever asset is being monitored. The fiber is passive, so no power supply is required along the asset. Temperature, strain, or vibration can be monitored with fiber optic sensing. The system can handle sensing and regular communication needs.
Monitor
- Roadways
- Railways
- Power cables
- Oil and gas wells
- Structural health, such as for dams
- Pipeline conditions, leaks, unauthorized access, heat trace monitoring
- Industrial process monitoring applications
- Seismic activities
- Third-party intrusion for security purposes
Installation advantages
DuraMulti protects the fiber while providing a permanent pathway for upgrades or changes, as well as for main communication needs. In some cases, DuraMulti can also represent a revenue opportunity for leasing or renting access to difficult to access right-of-ways. There is no significant degradation in fiber optic sensing effectiveness using DuraMulti and it has the added benefit of being locatable. Conduit placement handles more challenging installation obstacles and can reduce costly fiber splice points.
Components
The components in a fiber optic system include the fiber cable in the conduit, an interrogator that reads the real time signal off the fiber optic cable (with the processor that analyzes that signal), and intelligent monitoring software. The intelligent monitoring software presents the network operator with an analysis of what it detects based on what it considers to be a "normal" operational state for the asset being monitored. If there’s a "normal" amount of vibration when the asset is operating, the system learns to recognize it and then only triggers an alarm when an event is outside a "normal" condition.
