First responders, military, commercial, and public applications make use this proven technology to receive signals and broadcast back to the tower. As the density of cell towers increases to meet consumer demands, telecoms are maximizing resources within macro cells to reach wide area networks, also known as WANs. As the need for broadband increases, the ability to locate land and construct costly towers is growing more difficult. However, today there are more users and the need for data continues to rise. To help offload the macro network, Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) are being implemented.
Distributed Antenna Systems
DAS provides coverage for small cell, essentially subdividing the macro areas. A network of compact antenna nodes located at or below the clutter level provides an extension of wireless service capacity. Covering a few blocks, instead of miles, DAS offers the same wireless resources within a smaller footprint. DAS may be deployed indoors (iDAS) or outdoors (oDAS). MicroTechnology has the ability to homerun, go long distances with no splice points. Particularly in high density areas, MicroDucts overcome the challenges of limited space that many existing buildings face.
iDAS
Building owners now have the ability to equip their building with a neutral headend. DAS can be configured to support multiple service providers deploying a variety of frequency bands and technologies, making it versatile and scalable for the future. DAS is often used in large structures, such as stadiums, shopping malls, airports, hospitals, and corporate office buildings. Public Safety DAS provides life-saving coverage for first responders in all parts of a building to allow them to seamlessly use their emergency radios.
oDAS
Systems are also placed in the utility right-of-way (ROW), on top of utility poles, street light poles and traffic signal poles. DAS can ensure a reliable connection that actually uses less power overall. Distributed antenna systems are transparent to mobile devices, providing both voice and data services to mobile devices just like any tower on a cellular network.
